Yasumasa Morimura was born in Osaka in 1951, where he lives and works. He graduated from Kyoto City University of Art in 1978.

Since 1985 he has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions internationally. He was featured in one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1992); the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jouy-en-Josas, France (1993); the Hara Art Museum, Hara, Japan (1994), and the Yokohama Museum of Art, Yokohama, Japan (1996), among others.

His work was featured in the exhibition "Japanese Art After 1945: Scream Against the Sky" at the Guggenheim Museum SoHo in 1994.
