Jerelyn Hanrahan is a New York artist currently living and developing projects in Europe. In addition to realizing the international project "Gesture as Value" the artist is completing a book of "97 Drawings", text by New York/English Poet, Max Blagg. "A.W.O.L. assente sensa permesso" (Commentary on the White Cube) 1996 Temple Gallery, Rome,Italy A.W.O.L. challenges the viewer to assume the position of the artist, by presenting a situation where they must communicate out of a white cube/room. Sounds made by the individual who enters the cube are projected into the actual gallery space through the audio. intentionally the artist uses visual associations with a religious confessional, pulpit , stage, or platform for communication. |

A series of 14 wax hand mirrors, installed in a project room originally constructed to be a public bathroom. Text on wall, upon entering "objekte bitte anfassen ", translation, " please touch the objects" the room divided into symetrical "viewing booths", (referance dressing room) made from white shower curtains (referance, nudity, vulnerability ) were constructed to be each large enough for 1 person to enter. Inside each booth a wax hand mirror on a shelf. The hand mirrors were contructed with a hollow frame as opposed to a reflective surface., the viewer / participant seeing where they stood. The intention being to present another form of reflection. |
