A Monthly Newsletter
March 22, 2000
_____________________________
[This is the second of three monthly editions
of iolaINDEX for the Walker's Art Entertainment
Network.]
Greetings:
We made it down to the Slipper Room on Orchard
Street last night to help Rhizome.org celebrate
the Internet artists included in this year's
Whitney Biennial. Although we take a well-known
position of distain about such institutional
pandering we forgot about it what with all the
free-flowing vodka and real food being offered.
What can we say, we don't have the moral
integrity of RTMark.
Someone pointed out Mark Amerika and we saw the
back of his head but were distracted by some
chicken nugget things being passed under our nose.
A reporter from San Jose asked what we thought
of the Whitney selection and we diplomatically
said it was an interesting mix though we still
can't quite remember who was selected. When he
asked who the top five Internet artists are we
launched into our little speech about how that
isn't the point but soon realized we don't know
how to give reporters what they ask for and we're
not sure we want to learn.
Mostly we talked to the same people we've been
talking to (and emailing) for years and wondered
who all the other people were. Who invited them
to our party?
We hear the party went on until four in the morning
but we made a graceful early exit in time to check
that last batch of email of the day, scan the next
morning's New York Times online obituary for our
name (it's always good to be the first to know)
and went to bed.

2. EXCHANGE
============================================================
The following is an email exchange about exchanging
email between Frederic Madre in Paris and Netochka
Nesvanova in Denmark.
============================================================
FREDERIC MADRE:
Hello dear Netochka, I will call you Netochka,
before this I called you antiorp, f1f0, l.erreur,
integer and my friend porculus called you, still
does, =wc+ . But, yes, some people think it's
wrong. Some people think it's all wrong. Using
the internet, I mean. They think that it's good
to be on a mailing list but it's disturbing to
receive emails. I find that those people fall
in two categories, either they never write
anything except abuse at those who do or they
write but do not expect to receive things from
strangers. The first type is some internet
flavor of the hapless consumer the second is
involved in a coterie by which s/he wishes
to remain protected forever. mmm, what's your type ?

like bergman ? you make me think of those
big broad women in "screams and whispers".
I had to leave the film before the end,

and the women too big!

today, I feel that it is breaking. we see that
our way of thinking will be recognized, that
the clamp of moderation is regressing. today,
we see that our stubborn practice of fiction
breaks it. a simple machine like
http://pleine-peau.com/n8/spam is a threat.
In the right hands it produces subtle
ornamentation, in the right hands it becomes
a weapon, in the right hands it becomes just
another strange tool. We are a multitude of
right hands. Yup, today I feel it was long
and difficult and the enemy was strong and
dumb. Seldom do we see that technology is
not used to strentghten unacceptable
positions of unreasoned power. I wish that
the fight never stops, boredom always lurks.
