Monday, 8:35 pmBill Arning (director of White Columns) threw a birthday party last night for his boyfriend Pat. I took him a bottle of Piper-Sonoma then didn't see it again all night. Since it was Memorial Day weekend I assumed few people would show up, that they would all be at their summer homes opening up. Well, I guess I'm not the only one who "summers where they winter" as Fran Leibowitz would say. Lots of people came, some of them I even knew.
Marylin Minter told me her life story and it turns out we both came to New York at the same time (1977). She got a rent controlled loft for $400 with her husband and still has it. I don't think we shared the same experience. She's concerned about what she can do for her friends who have AIDS and I told her to drop in on an ACT UP meeting just to see how they were run and to adapt some of the ideas to her own group.
Talked surfing with Paul H-O. Tom Cougliani was dressed like one of Santa's elfs. Others: Andreas Serrano and Julie Ault, Stefan and Linda Stux, Collins and Milazzo, John Lindell, Tom Brazelton, Craig Pleasants. One woman draped herself across Stefan Stux's chair -- very strange woman whom I first though was in drag but someone said she's Elaine Stertevant's daughter.
Josie Robertson's husband Ed got chased around the room and called "breeder" by Kate McCarrick. Josie's pregnant and her blood pressure is up so she has to lie in bed and couldn'g go. Ed gave me their home number to call her.
All the cute guys were straight and the dorky guys gay. When I told Bob Huff about it later he said it must have been an art party.
Lots of available women, many gathered around Paul H-O.
I left around midnight and talked to Cyrus, Bob, Rick, Jonathan (who looks like a buddhist these days) and others at the bar.
Got up at 10:00 this morning and went out to buy and air conditioner. Bought one and probably paid too much but I don't care even though it's taken all my money for the month. I have to talk to Simon about giving me more because I have to pay quarterlies this month.
Tim came over and gave me a late birthday present: "Flowers for Bruce Nauman" by Dennis Oppenheim. I gave him the Robert Longo book. He helped take the old air conditioner out of the window and we talked. After he left I cleaned the windows and called Josie to make a date for lunch Wednesday.
Skipped ACT UP tonight and bought a Replacements album instead, which I'm listening to as I type this.
