The reason Leonardo kept so many notebooks is that his mind was not organized and the only way he could keep his many random thoughts to refer back to was by putting them down in a disorganized fashion.
Q: What would have happened if Leonardo had an organized, Scholastic mind?
A: He would not have been Leonardo.
In Roses and Apses Henry Adams writes of the Virgin and her Palace as the reason for the grandeur of Chartres. It is not the work of the architect but of the Virgin herself, her hand planning every placement and idea. In other words, there are things about this Gothic cathedral that don't fit in with progress...the apse is not like other cathedrals, things are more Romanesque (and therefore not "modern").
So, the Virgin is what we might call faith. Or better yet, intuition -- that something is "right" even though it is not right. And we know that intuition is only direct perception of our memory, unfiltered through conception. Expression pure and simple -- adequate.
