Matt Mullican has been using computers for a long time. His iconic images were naturally adaptive but what I've seen of his use of them in VR environments isn't very interesting. What is interesting are the objects that came out of the VR environment.
More and more I'm thinking about the VR environment is a "switch" environment rather than an immersive environment. It's not meant to be entered but to transform objects by expanding and/or compiling them.
specific ----- general ----- specific
object ----- compiler/expander ----- object
Rather than a 3d immersive environment what we should be looking at is a compiler/expander. Most art gets trapped in the middle mode. What we are looking for it that second object mode.
The whole process looks something like a bell curve.
