For a long time I listen to the sound of the train and then follow it in my mind, out to California where the tracks intersect with Highway 58. The road and the railroad meet, there, with the San Andreas fault. I see the mountains, the Transverse Range, dark and steep in the starshine. The train stops at the Tehachepi Station. Lights appear again on the wall, arched across the ceiling. A constellation: perhaps, the bear.
